Before we begin, what is an IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) ? It's a device capable of measuring force (acceleration) and velocity. It generally consists of an accelerometer and a gyroscope . Therefore, an IMU doesn't measure angles . At least not directly; it requires some calculations.

The MPU-6050 is a 6DOF IMU (pronounced “ 6 Degrees of Freedom ”). This means it has an accelerometer and a gyroscope , both with 3 axes (3+3 = 6DOF). There are 9DOF IMUs, in which case they also have a magnetometer . Others may have 5DOF, in which case the gyroscope only measures two axes, etc.
