Description:

The ST5 series five-channel DC-DC DIN rail mount solid state relay (or 5-channel solid state relay, 10-pin solid state relay) has five independent I/O (input-output) channels; therefore, an ST5 series can act as five single-channel solid state relays, meaning five different ones.

A solid state relay (SSR) is just what it sounds like; an IC that acts like a mechanical relay. They allow you to control high voltage loads from lower voltage control circuits. Solid state relays have several advantages over mechanical relays. One such advantage is that they can be switched by a much lower voltage and with a much lower current than most mechanical relays. Also, because there are no moving contacts, solid state relays can switch much faster and for much longer without needing to be replaced.

They achieve this by using infrared light as the "contact"; a solid state relay is really just an IR LED and a Foto-Triac (or Photo-Transistor) sealed in a small case. Thanks to the fact that both sides of the relay are photo-coupled, you can rely on the same type of electrical isolation as in mechanical relays. These particular solid state relays can interrupt 24VDC at 5A.
