What is a CT sensor?

Current transformers (CTS) are sensors used to measure alternating current. They are particularly useful for measuring the electricity consumption (or generation, as the case may be) of an entire building.

The split core type, like the CT in the image above, is particularly suitable for DIY use; it can be clipped or hooked onto either the live or neutral wire entering the building, without having to do any high voltage electrical work.
