These modules are typically used in safes—there's a high-power DSP chip that handles image rendering, calculations, and the search and investigation functions. It connects to any microcontroller or system with TTL serial and sends data packets to take photos, detect fingerprints, and perform the search. You can enroll new fingers directly—up to 162 fingerprints can be stored in the flash memory. There's a red LED on the lens that lights up during a photo so you know it's working.

We like this particular sensor because it's not only easy to use, it also comes with fairly straightforward Windows software that makes testing the module simple—you can even register using the software and see a fingerprint image on your computer screen.
