Arduino Pro Mini doesn't come with connectors so you can solder any connectors or wires in the orientation you need. We recommend that new Arduino users start with the Uno R3. It's a great tip that will help you get started quickly. The Arduino Pro series is for users who understand the system voltage limitations (3.3V), the lack of connectors and off-board USB.

We really wanted to minimize the cost of an Arduino. In order to achieve this, we used all SMD components, two layers, etc. This board connects directly to the FTDI Breakout motherboard and supports auto-reset. The Arduino Pro Mini also works with the FTDI cable, but the FTDI cable does not have the DTR pin, so the auto-reset function will not work. There is a voltage regulator so it can accept voltage up to 12VDC. If you are supplying unregulated power to the board, make sure to connect to the "RAW" pin and not VCC.
