Description:
DS3231 is a low-cost and extremely accurate I2C Real-Time Clock (RTC) module, with an integrated temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO). The device incorporates a battery that maintains accurate timekeeping when the main power supply is disconnected. The integrated oscillator improves the long-term accuracy of the device and reduces the number of components in the production line. The DS3231 is available in commercial and industrial temperature ranges.
The RTC keeps track of seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month, and year information. For months with fewer than 31 days, the end date is automatically adjusted, including corrections for leap years. The clock operates in either a 24-hour format or a 12-hour format with AM/PM indication. It provides two configurable alarm clocks and a calendar that can be set to output a square wave. Address and data are transferred serially via a bidirectional I2C bus.
A precision temperature-compensated voltage reference and comparator circuit monitors the VCC status to detect power failures, provide a reset output, and, if necessary, automatically switch to the backup power supply.
In addition to saving time and high accuracy, the DS3231 also has some other features that extend the host system with additional functionalities and a range of options. The device integrates a highly accurate digital temperature sensor, accessible via the I2C interface (at the same time). The accuracy of this temperature sensor is ±3°C on the chip's power control circuit, which can automatically detect and manage the main and backup power supplies (i.e., low battery voltage) to switch between power sources. If a main power failure occurs, the device can continue to provide accurate timing and temperature, and performance is unaffected. When the main power is re-supplied or the voltage value returns to within the allowed range, the on-chip reset function can be used to restart the system microprocessor.
