Description:
This 0.005" Muscle Wire® (also known as shape memory Nitinol) is a 30cm long piece of nickel-titanium alloy that can flex and contract when a specific amount of heat or current is applied to it. If you're asking yourself "What magic is this?!" We assure you this is not magic, but simple science thanks to shape memory and a shift between the weaker, low-temperature, easily-deformed (martensitic) form and its stronger, high-temperature, "remembered" (austenitic) form.
When the Muscle Wire® is in its martensitic form, it can be shaped and bent into different forms. However, by applying an electrical current of ~200mA or heating it to ~100°C, it returns to its austenitic form and recovers its previous shape with great force. Additionally, it can be annealed at ~500°C (using an industrial oven or simply a lighter) to give it the desired shape; by applying that current or heat, it will recover that new shape.
Note: The datasheet found below corresponds to Flexinol® actuator wire; it is not exactly the same as all Muscle Wire®, but it is close. Flexinol® actuator wires are specifically made for linear actuators that replace small motors or solenoids.
Features:
- Length: 305 mm
- Diameter: 0.127 mm
- Current required for austenitic form: 200 mA
- Pulling force: 0.49 lb
- Resistance: 1.9 ohms/inch
