Description:
Would you like to add powerful and easy-to-use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to your robot, art, or other electronic project? Of course you would! With BLE now included in modern smartphones and tablets, it's fun to add wireless connectivity. So what you need is the new Adafruit Bluefruit LE SPI Friend!
The Bluefruit LE SPI Friend makes it easy to incorporate Bluetooth Low Energy into any device with 4 or 5 GPIO pins. With SPI, you don't have to worry about baud rate, flow control, or giving up a UART port. Connect it to your Arduino or other microcontroller via the common four-pin SPI interface (MISO, MOSI, SCK, and CS), plus a fifth GPIO pin for interrupts (to let the Arduino know when data or a response is ready).
This multi-function module can do so much! Most people will be happy to use Nordic's standard RX/TX UART connection profile. In this profile, the Bluefruit acts as a data pipe that can transparently transmit data between your iOS or Android device. You can use our iOS or Android app, or create your own to communicate with the UART service.
The board is capable of much more than just sending strings over the air! Thanks to an easy-to-learn set of AT commands, you have full control over the device's behavior, including the ability to define and manipulate your own GATT services and characteristics, or change how the device advertises itself to other Bluetooth Low Energy devices. You can also use the AT commands to query the chip temperature, check battery voltage, check the RSSI or MAC address of the connection, and much more. Too long to list here!
With our Bluefruit app for iOS or Android, you can quickly prototype your project using your iOS or Android phone or tablet as a controller. We have a color picker, quaternion/accelerometer/gyroscope/magnetometer or location (GPS) and an 8-button gamepad.
And you can do so much more!
Bluefruit can also act as an HID keyboard (for BLE HID compatible devices).
It can become a BLE heart rate monitor (a standard profile for BLE); you just need to add the pulse detection circuit.
Turn it into a UriBeacon, Google's standard for Bluetooth LE beacons. Just turn it on and the "Friend" will send a URL to any nearby device that has the UriBeacon app installed.
Built-in wireless bootloader capability so we can keep you up to date with the latest firmware. Use any Android or iOS device to get updates and install them!
Why use the Adafruit module?
There are many BLE modules on the market, with varying qualities in both hardware design and firmware. Why choose this one?
One of the biggest advantages of the Adafruit Bluefruit LE family is that we develop all device firmware from scratch. We control every line of code that runs on our modules, so we are not at the mercy of third parties, who might be interested in keeping their code updated or meeting our customers' needs.
Since we control the entire product, we add important features for our customers, we can solve any problems that arise without resorting to third parties, and we can even change Bluetooth SoCs completely if the need arises.
