Description:
The SparkFun ESP8266 Thing is a development board for the ESP8266 WiFi SoC, a leading platform for the Internet of Things (IoT) or WiFi-related projects. It's breadboard-friendly, and integrating with the Arduino IDE is only a few steps away. We’ve made the ESP8266 easy to use by breaking out all of the module’s pins, adding a LiPo charger, a power supply, and all the other necessary circuitry.
Why the name? We affectionately call it the "Thing" because it’s the perfect foundation for your Internet of Things project. The Thing does all the things from blinking an LED to sending data with phant.io, and it can be programmed just like any other microcontroller. You can even program it through the Arduino IDE by installing the ESP8266 Arduino addon.
The SparkFun ESP8266 Thing is a relatively bare-bones board. The pins are broken out to two parallel, breadboard-compatible rows. USB and LiPo connectors on the top of the board provide power, controlled by the nearby ON/OFF switch. LEDs in the board’s interior indicate power, charging, and IC status. The maximum voltage of the ESP8266 is 3.6V, so the device features an on-board 3.3V regulator to deliver a safe and consistent voltage to the IC. This means the ESP8266’s I/O pins also operate at 3.3V; you’ll need to level shift any 5V signals heading into the IC. A 3.3V FTDI Basic is required to program the SparkFun ESP8266 Thing, but other serial converters with 3.3V I/O levels should work as well. The converter needs a DTR line in addition to the RX and TX pins.
