Description:

Cell phone + GPS tracking, all in one? Oh yes! Introducing the Adafruit FONA 808 MiniGSM + GPS, an all-in-one cell phone module that allows you to add location tracking, voice, text, data, and SMS to your project in one small, adorable package.

This module measures just 1.75" x 1.6", but a surprising amount of technology is packed into it. At its heart is a powerful GSM cellular module (we use the latest SIM808) with integrated GPS. This module can do almost anything.

If you want a version without GPS, check out the FONA 800

If you want a version with GPS, check out the Adafruit FONA 808 Shield - Mini GSM + GPS cellular for Arduino

If you just want a plain FONA, click here.

- Quad-band 850/900/1800/1900 MHz - connect to any global GSM network with any 2G SIM card (in the US, we suggest T-Mobile)

- Fully integrated GPS (MT3337 chipset with -165 dBm tracking sensitivity) that can be controlled and queried on the same serial port

- Make and receive voice calls using a headset or an external 32Ω speaker + electret microphone

- Send and receive SMS messages

- Send and receive GPRS data (TCP / IP, HTTP, etc.)

- PWM vibration motor / buzzer control

- On-command interface with "auto-baud" detection

Here are the GPS specifications:

- 22 tracking / 66 acquisition channels

- GPS L1 C / A code

- Sensitivity: Tracking: -165 dBm, cold starts: -147 dBm

- Time to first fix: Cold starts: (typ.) 32s, warm starts: 1s (typ.), hot starts: 5s (typ.)

- Accuracy: approximately 2.5 meters

Sounds delicious, doesn't it? So we've mounted this fine module on a small board with all the extras you need to excel in your next project:

- Integrated LiPoly battery charging circuit so you can carry your project portably. Use any 500mAh+ LiPoly or Li-ion battery and recharge via MicroUSB when needed. Two LEDs let you know when charging is complete.

- Standard 4-pole TRRS headphone jack. Use any 'iPhone' or 'Android' compatible headphones with microphone

- Individual pins for external 32Ω speaker and electret microphone if you don't want to use a headset

- Level shifting circuits so it can run with 2.8V to 5V logic.

- Vibration motor driver (buzzer) so you can have silent notifications

- UFL connections for external antennas

- LED indicators for power and network connectivity

- Standard SIM slides in the back

By itself, this module can't do anything. It requires a microcontroller to control it! We suggest and use an Arduino but any 3-5V microcontroller with a UART can send and receive commands via the RX/TX pins.

You will also need some necessary accessories to make the FONA work. These are not included!

SIM card! A 2G Mini SIM card is required to do anything on the cellular network.

Lipo battery - 500mAh or larger!

MicroUSB cable for charging the battery.

External UFL GSM antenna - this thin one works great.

(Or, if you want an SMA antenna - a UFL to SMA adapter cable)

External passive UFL GPS antenna - like this!

There are also some recommended accessories. They are not necessary, but you will probably want them!

4-pole TRRS headphones - Any 'iPhone' or 'Android' compatible (but not original iPhone) should work. We tried about 10 different ones, and basically the more expensive, the more comfortable and louder, but our official iPhone headset microphone didn't work.

Vibration motor - the FONA can drive it directly, just solder a mini vibration motor to the drive!

USB console cable - the microUSB connector is only for charging, but you can wire a console cable for direct connection to the module if you want to send commands from a terminal (ideal for testing and adjustments)
