A Pt100 is a temperature sensor. It consists of a platinum wire that, at -50°C, has, for example, 80 ohms, and its electrical resistance increases as the temperature increases. The increase in resistance is not linear, but rather increasing and characteristic of platinum, so that tables allow you to find the exact temperature it corresponds to.

A Pt100 is a particular type of RTD (Thermo-Resistive Device). Industrial Pt100s are typically encapsulated in the same way as thermocouples, that is, inside a stainless steel or other material tube (sheath). One end houses the sensing element (platinum wire) and the other end houses the electrical terminal of the cables, protected inside a round aluminum box (head).

Advantages of Pt100:

On the other hand, Pt100s, while slightly more expensive and not as mechanically rigid as thermocouples, are superior to them, especially in low-temperature applications (-100 to 200°C). Pt100s can easily deliver accuracies to within a tenth of a degree, with the advantage that the Pt100 does not gradually decay, giving erroneous readings. Instead, it normally opens, allowing the measuring device to immediately detect a sensor failure and issue a warning. This behavior is a major advantage in applications such as cold storage, where an undetected temperature deviation could cause serious damage. Furthermore, the Pt100 can be easily placed at a distance from the meter (up to about 30 meters) using conventional copper wire for extension.
